DiscoverThe best brand for eye exams..

With around 60% of survey respondents buying glasses at the same place as their vision test, it makes sense to get one-on-one advice from someone familiar with your prescription. But you can save money by shopping, even online (see the best brands below).

Buying glasses: Expert advice

Our experienced opticians offer the following recommendations when deciding where to buy glasses and finding out how much you can afford:

  1. Check for conditions associated with "free" eye examsFor example, do you have to pay if you don't buy it?
  2. Be honest with your budgetMost opticians fail their eye exams, so you may want to try to maintain one-on-one attention, including finding affordable glasses.
  3. Attention to quality and fit.The markup on cheaper frames tends to be higher - if you can spend a little more, you'll get better value for the frames. Check for smooth surfaces and raised sides. Make sure they fit your face shape and are comfortable; if you are not used to wearing glasses or have problems, it is best to seek help from an optician. Also check that they don't tip over if you tilt your head forward and that the sides are the right length for your head.
  4. Check whether you are entitled to help from your employerAcross the UK, you can claim the full cost of a standardized test from your employer if you use a screen at work. If you need glasses specifically to do work, your employer must pay for a pair of basic single vision glasses or at least subsidize part of the cost.
  5. Check to see if the offers meet your needsKeep an eye out for the offers, but check the terms and conditions: does it only include single vision lenses or a limited number of frames? Do you have to pay extra for basic treatment or high index lenses? If you need two pairs of glasses, buy two get one free to save money.

Buying glasses online - what you need to know

Best place to buy glasses - which ones? (2)
(Video) A Beginner's Guide to Buying GREAT Glasses

People tend to shop online for cost and convenience, and we've found that it's often a good choice for people with simple recipes.

61% of online glasses respondents purchased single vision lenses instead of zoom lenses. In the past, we've found that if your recipes are relatively simple, you shouldn't have too much trouble shopping online.

You need to be even more careful if you have complex prescriptions (eg higher power or zoom lenses) as in this case it is essential to get really specific measurements to ensure the frame fits and the lens sits correctly in front of your eyes .

We've also found that you're less likely to get personalized information about lens thickness, frame, coating or tint when ordering online.

5 tips for buying glasses online

Make sure you have the correct measurements on hand

Opticians do not need to take all the measurements needed to fit glasses to your prescription because some are taken at the time of prescription, not at the eye exam. This means you can miss details like PD (Pupillary Distance) when buying online.

PD helps position the pupil precisely in the center of the lens. It is crucial that higher prescription and zoom lenses have their accurate PD, as measurements over a few millimeters can render the glasses useless.

Best practice is for the shop to ask the customer for the exact PD, unfortunately this is not always included in your prescription. But some stores have a way to do it at home. Others just allow you to use an average measurement, which can result in an ill-fitting lens.

Look for sites that will send you a selection of frames to try at home. Also look for sites that have a "best fit finder" and frame fitting tips and provide full frame measurements. If you must take your own measurements, make sure they are accurate.

wear the right glasses

If you have a heavy prescription, you should choose high-index (thinner) lenses when shopping online, as they are more likely to fit a variety of frames.

As a general rule of thumb, if your prescription power is greater than +/- 3 but less than +/- 5, consider using thinner lenses (about 1.67 index). If your prescription is stronger than +/- 5, you probably want to be slimmer (about 1.74 index).

get the right frame

When shopping online, it's not necessarily easy to know which frames fit your prescription (as above) or fit correctly.

Some websites offer free home testing services. This can be a great way to make up for the lack of in-person health consultations and allow you to take your time deciding what health is right for you.

Be careful when buying bifocals or zoom lenses online

Zoom lenses are the reason many consumers complain to optik's consumer complaints service.

Ideal zoom lens design, clear reading at long, medium and close distances, comfortable area switching, easy adjustment and less edge distortion.

Over the past 10 years, zoom designs have become very complex, but there has been enormous variation in lens quality and variability. use our guideChoice of zoom lensto make sure you know what level you need and what quality you are buying.

Accurate fit measurements such as pupillary distance (PD) and vertical pupil position are critical to understanding the performance of any lens.

Our experts also strongly advise buyers not to purchase bifocals or zoom lenses from websites that do not ask for at least additional information to help them get the size needed, such as a photo of the customer in the selected frame.

Know your rights

If the item you have purchased is defective and does not work as it should, or does not correspond to the description, you canConsumer lawJust like when you buy in person.

Any terms and conditions that state that you are responsible for the cost of returning goods will not apply to returned goods that are faulty.

When you buy products online, you have an additional right of return. This is because your decision may be based on a brief description or image, so what you receive is not always what you expected.

The consumer agreement provisions give you 14 calendar days to cancel from the date you receive the goods. look at oursConsumer rightssection for more information.

What you need to know before buying contact lenses online

If you are new to contact lenses, it is best to buy them in store as you will need to assess their fit and get a specific contact lens prescription.

In the UK, contact lenses should only be worn by (or under the supervision of) a registered optometrist, qualified optician or doctor.

After the fitting is complete, your doctor will give you a contact lens specification. You can then buy contact lenses in store or online, as long as the sale takes place under the "general guidance" of a registered doctor.

Ordering online can be a more convenient option, but it's still important to have regular follow-up, including health checks, treatment of symptoms such as itchy eyes, and advice on any problems you have.

Some stores offer packages that include a contact lens order, eye exam and lens care. You can compare contact lens prices online to find a good deal, but it's best to stick to trusted brands and sellers registered with the General Optical Council.

(Video) Buying prescription glasses online: What they don't tell you

The law states that online sellers must verify that buyers have a valid contact lens prescription by seeing or consulting the optician who issued the prescription. Eyes change over time, and opticians can detect worrisome complications and practices, such as sight-threatening improper cleaning.
