The next modification we suggest to improve the performance of the 5300 Vortec is the addition of an aftermarket inlet. Most inlets for the Vortec are marketed as cold air inlets or ram air inlets. However, this is primarily a marketing technique. True cold air intakes place the air filter very low in the engine compartment or fender/side duct area. Calling themselves cold air intakes, most Chevy 5300 Vortec air intakes are actually a little more efficient than the OEMs, putting a shiny airbox in almost the same spot as the original. The gains with these intakes really come from the lack of restriction and a larger filter rather than access to cooler air, although it does help a little.

In general, the inputs alone are not going to add a ton more power to the 5.3 Vortec. However, in combination with tuning, it can add up to 15 whp/wtq. If you decide to add more mods, the entries will become very useful to help the engine breathe better.

When getting a pickup truck for a Vortec 5.3, there are some important things to consider and look out for. One is the price, a good buy should be between $250 and $500. Anything cheaper is unlikely to do better and could be worse than stocks, and anything more expensive is probably not worth the minimal gains. There are a few exceptions, but spending over $600 for 15Whq is a pretty high price, barring an exhaust.

Another important thing to note is the relatively straight tube without a lot of twists and turns. The easier the airflow from the filter to the throttle body, the better. Also make sure you get an inlet that comes with a sealed air box. Enclosed airboxes help the engine maintain a more accurate MAF scale. They also usually have a duct that brings in air from the fender or outside the car, which is usually cooler than the engine compartment. Not cold enough to really be a "cold air" intake, but lower than the insanely high temps under the hood.

There are turbo and supercharger kits for many vehicles equipped with 5.3 Vortec and both have their pros and cons. Turbos are great options for those who want to drive with as much power as possible. Superchargers are great for lower to medium wattage builds that want to use 5-10 PSI Boost max.

Depending on the size of your turbo or supercharger and how much boost you run will determine how much power you make. Smaller boost applications only add 100-150 hp to the power, while the big turbos push the 5.3 Vortec to over 1000 hp if you really want it. Note that the higher the turbo, the more turbo lag.
